About Us
OPA Cancer Charity, formerly the Oesophageal Patients Association (OPA), has been supporting those affected by oesophageal and gastric cancer since 1985. The charity was founded by David Kirby (OBE) following his recovery from oesophageal cancer and officially registered as a charity in 1997. In May 2021, we transitioned to a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, continuing our commitment to patients and families across the UK.
Since our inception, OPA Cancer Charity/Oesophageal Patients Association has supported thousands of patients, caregivers, and families. Our community includes individuals facing oesophageal or gastric cancer, their devoted caregivers, supportive family members and friends, and healthcare professionals. We produce thousands of booklets and leaflets each year, providing free, expert resources to patients, families, and organisations.
Please note: OPA Cancer Charity is the same organisation as the Oesophageal Patients Association—our name has changed, but our mission and support remain unchanged.
All of our resources are supplied completely free of charge, funded by the charity. Donations from supporters enable us to continue offering guidance, support, and information to those who need it most.

We never give clinical advice or comment on treatment. We encourage all patients who approach us to explain their anxieties to the Team caring for them and if necessary to request a second opinion.
Whatever your concerns, please call us and we will do our very best to help you!

Supporting you throughout your cancer journey
For forty years, OPA Cancer Charity (previously the Oesophageal Patients Association) has fought against oesophageal and gastric cancers, raising awareness about the dangers of persistent heartburn, indigestion, Barrett’s oesophagus and acid reflux. We offer free support and resources for patients, caregivers and their families.
