David Kirby OBE

The Oesophageal Patients Association (OPA) was founded in 1985 by David Kirby, following his recovery from oesophageal cancer. It was officially registered as a charity on 19th May 1997.

Curative treatment for oesophageal cancer typically involves major surgery, which often leads to long-term digestive issues. David discovered that sharing his personal experience with new patients helped them better understand what to expect and improved their outlook during treatment. For many years, he regularly visited patients in hospital and spoke at conferences both in the UK and internationally. In recognition of his charitable work, David was awarded an OBE in 2000.

Sadly, Daphne Kirby passed away in 2024. She was a pillar of strength and support to David, and she will be deeply missed by all of us.
