World Barrett’s Oesophagus Day takes place every year on 16th May and is dedicated to increase the understanding of this condition, encouraging earlier diagnosis, and highlighting the importance of ongoing research and support for those affected.
Don’t ignore persistent reflux
Heartburn and acid reflux are often dismissed as ‘just one of those things’ — but ongoing symptoms can sometimes be linked to Barrett’s oesophagus.
Barrett’s oesophagus is a condition caused by long-term acid reflux that can increase the risk of developing oesophageal cancer.
This World Barrett’s Oesophagus Day, OPA Cancer Charity is encouraging people to know the symptoms, trust their instincts, and speak to their GP if symptoms persist.
Symptoms can include:
- Persistent heartburn or acid reflux
- Difficulty swallowing
- Food sticking in the throat or chest
- Ongoing indigestion
- Chronic sore throat or hoarseness
