We are sorry to announce
that our founder, David Kirby, sadly passed away on 14th May 2026.
David founded the Oesophageal Patients Association in 1985, which has since evolved into OPA Cancer Charity, following his recovery from oesophageal cancer. David discovered that sharing his personal experience with new patients helped them better understand what to expect and improved their outlook during treatment. In recognition of his outstanding charitable work and contribution to patient support, David was awarded an OBE in 2000.
Details of a memorial event to celebrate David’s life will be shared in due course.
Our thoughts are with David’s family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.
