New breath test to monitor how well cancer treatments are working
Research Study
We are currently supporting Massimo Micocci, Honorary Research Associate in Human Factors based at NIHR Health Technology Research Centre on a research study to explore a new breath test.
Summary of Study
“We are running a research study at Imperial College London to explore a new breath test that could help doctors monitor how well cancer treatments are working, particularly for patients with oesophageal and gastric (OG) cancers. This study is sponsored by the NIHR HealthTech Research Centre (HRC) at Imperial College (https://hrc-invitro.nihr.ac.uk), part of a national initiative funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) to support the development of cutting-edge medical technologies.
This is an exploratory study, meaning we are still in the early stages of learning how the breath test could fit into the cancer care pathway. At Imperial, we believe strongly that the voice of patients is essential when developing new medical tools. We want to understand how patients feel about the test – including how it would fit into their treatment journey and any concerns or preferences they might have.
Taking part in the study would involve an online conversation about key aspects of cancer care and thoughts about using a breath test. We won’t ask for any personal or sensitive information. To thank participants for their time, we offer a payment of £25.”
The project is supervised by Professor George Hanna, Head of the Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial College, and Professor Peter Buckle, Deputy Director of the NIHR HRC IVD.
